a valentine's day (questionable) miracle

remember our christmas miracle? well, it appears that the christmas miracle is going to give us a valentine's day miracle. ever since holly was let out of her kennel and given free run of the house, we haven't seen much of her. she's getting less afraid, though, so last night i got to spend more than 30 seconds in the same room with her. instead of running from me, or even scampering quickly, she sauntered by. this gave me enough time to see, quite clearly, that little miss holly isn't quite so little anymore. in fact, she appears to be "with kittens." tonight we tried our best to capture her so we could go to the vet tomorrow to confirm (or, better yet, deny) this suspicion. sadly, she was quite ferocious in her avoidance of our manuevers and is back to hiding in this hole by our dishwasher.

obviously, my first goal is to get her out of this hole and get her back into her kennel, which is a much safer place for her to birth her kittens. given the date i got her and the fact that she couldn't have gotten pregnant from either of my neutered boys, sometime in the next 12 days we should have a houseful of kittens. since i've never had a pregnant cat nor even witnessed the birth of kittens, if anyone has any advice, i'd be delighted to hear it!

the mom (and grandmom-to-be!)

Wow, how exciting! Best thing to do would probably be to get her back in her kennel, or at least shut into a room of her own. You want her to feel safe and she will want a hidden place probably too. Especially since she is still a little nervous around you. Maybe a blanket covering 3 sides of her kennel? She should do the rest and if you can be there to witness the birth and make sure everything goes ok, that would be good too. Definately talk to your vet about her. I would start her now on some kitten food. Maybe mixing it w/her other food until she's totally on kitten food. She needs the extra fat and vitamins in the kitten food for her growing babies and for after she gives birth too because she'll be feeding babies. Best thing to do is call your vet and he/she can tell you everything you'll need to do to prepare. Keep us posted!!

Yup, mom counted back and it's just about the right timing. Kat's right, get her on kitten food for the extra's she and the kittens need. Any clue as to how old Holly is? My Sadie had two litters under the same porch before my friend was able to trap her, the first did not fare so well because she was so young. The second did very well, that may be because we used them to catch mom. Get her to the vet for confirmation or denial. And Happy Valentine's Day, Gramma...hehehe

Oh my, kittens? I hope not, but maybe it is true. Hope you get to get Holly into a spot where you can check it out.

Wow! I've never seen kittens except for Harlie, but my Mom has been around kittens before. If she is indeed pregnant, Holly will pretty much take care of everything. The important thing is that she has a warm, safe place, where she feels she can hide the kittens (but that actually isn't too hidden from you). Emma's Kat pretty much covered everything. And it's important to get her someplace soon. When one of my Mom's cats had kittens when she was younger (long story), they didn't sequester the cat at all, and the cat had her babies all over my Grandma's shoes because she thought that closet was the safest!! Anyway, good luck and keep us posted!

This is the little kitten you rescued from the freeway here in Houston? Oh my gosh. What a surprise.

I was with a stray cat that we had been feeding and let in to have her kittens. She wanted me right beside her all the way. It was truly one of the events of my life to witness the birth of her four kittens. When I went back, after leaving her to tend to them and sleep, there were two more.

We nicknamed her Six Pack, cause that's how many kittens she had.

A bunch of little Valentine's, how cute.

"I don't know nothin bout birthin no babies". Know what? Holly will proly know what to do herself.
A furiend thot her cat was pregnant, but the vet sed it was false. So the cat was howlin an she threw her outside, an soon (like an hour) the cat brot back her two "false" kittens from outside to a closet inside.
One of those kittens slept on my mom most of a nite, but mommacat kept comin to check on her an finly stomped all ofur Mom to retrieve her baby. You can't be too careful who yur daughter sleeps wif, right?
Oh boy oh boy... kittens!
